yes, how could we possibly consider anything else to write about when we know a mural that has just turned 30! Nuclear Dawn mural on Coldharbour Lane in Central Brixton, was opened on 21st February 1981 and last Sunday, we celebrated it’s 30th birthday! Both artists, Dale McCrea and Brian Barnes reunited for the first time in 25 years too join the London Mural Preservation Society, members past and present from Carlton Mansions Housing Co-op and locals from the surrounding area, in remembering the creation of this piece all those years ago.
The picture below which was sent to me the other year (thank you) shows the mural nearing a state of completion.
This next image is actually a photo of the original watercolour which now resides in the Victoria and Albert Museum print room – go and have a look!
And this is the complete mural:
Step forward 30 years and the mural is looking rather unwell. It’s still as striking but graffiti and tree damage has eaten away at the piece. But that isn’t something to stop us celebrating it’s birthday.
Below you can see the eager crowds taking a look!
A jolly day was had by all! Read more about it on Hannah Miller’s blog post!
The mural is pretty damaged in places. Below you can see the image of Thatcher before much of it got graffitied:
Another nice detail in the mural is an image of the mural itself in the mural!
And finally, a different view of the mural:
So that’s some photos of this month’s MURAL OF THE MONTH! If you would like to see a few more, check out our Flickr page and if you have a flickr account add us as a contact for more mural images!

Hey!
I helped to paint some of this! And my daughter Vashti was born in this building! I have since lost touch with Dale, and I didn’t know about this event, or I’d have been there. I only found out today by complete chance. How could I get in touch with Dale?
Yours,
Melodie.
