Well, I was a little concerned that we were showing a bit too much favour to north of the river so we took a tube deep down south to sunny Stockwell so we could step out of the train, cross the road and view a mural painted on a deep level shelter in the middle of a roundabout.
And I can already hear you asking why is it called the Stockwell Memorial Mural. This is because the land , which was the last remaining bit of South Lambeth Common, is a memorial garden. In the centre is a clock tower and memorial to those who died in the Great War. Check out this fantastic website to learn about the people mentioned on the memorial and the campaign to get it restored!
Because of the nature of the garden, the mural is about the First and Second World War; it also includes references to Stockwell local history – look out for Van Gogh, James Bond and the MV Empire Windrush.
The mural is looking a little worse for wear. Painted in 1999 and finished in 2001, it hasn’t aged well. However, with funding now made available for the restoration of five Lambeth war memorials, and a redevelopment of the Stockwell Memorial garden, there is every possibility that a new paint job would be forth coming. Let’s hope so! Not only does this mural offer the opportunity to talk about local history but also to talk about the impact of the two world wars. It could be a great educational tool!
So you know what I’m going to say next. Yes, on your bike, get your rollerskates on, hop on the underground, overground and take a hike to visit this painting! Location information is here!
