Earlier this year, we had news that the Hokusai Wave Mural in Camberwell, (a reversed copy of Hokusai’s famous Great Wave off Kanagawa) had been damaged by an explosion in the building below. Breaking stories were unclear to what extend the painting and the wall had been damaged as the explosion had taken out the building in front of the mural. However, luck was on our side and the mural escaped with a limited amount of damage.

Hokusai Wave Mural, Camberwell, after the fire. Much of the lower left of the mural has been destroyed.
Much of the lower left hand side of the mural is missing but the structure of the wall has been checked and is without damage. We met with the artist Dominic Swords to discuss how we could go about repairing the piece and the plan is to get some artistic volunteers to come and help restore the piece. Vinnie O’Connell, who worked on the Brixton Windmill Mural Restoration, has taken the lead and set up a facebook page to attract help and keep people posted on the latest news!
If you’d like to get involved, then either visit the facebook page, like it and post on the wall or send us an email and we will pass it on. Watch this space!
